James Rodriguez has strongly been linked with a move away from Real Madrid this summer after falling out of favour with Zinedine Zidane. The Colombia international fuelled speculation when in Sunday’s 4-1 win over Sevilla he appeared to say goodbye to the fans as he was substituted.
And now his stepfather Juan Carlos Restrepo has further fanned the flames by claiming Rodriguez should leave the Bernabeu. “I would prefer him to be a starter in another team than a substitute in Madrid,” Restrepo told Spanish radio station Cadena SER.
“James is a native of Madrid, but first of all he seeks happiness as a human being. “This is a very important year in which everyone wants to be at their best for the World Cup (2018).”
Rodriguez has not been named in Real’s squad for tonight’s away game at Celta Vigo, adding further weight to reports he is leaving. And one possible destination is Manchester United with Spanish media heavily linking the Colombian with a move to Old Trafford.
Discussing potential summer transfers, Jose Mourinho said: “I’m sure, at the end of the summer, probably we won’t have exactly my first options, because it’s difficult to succeed in every attempt. “But I’m sure we’re going to do something interesting and something to improve our team for next season.
“I’m not a silly manager to say I give the names and you have to give me the players – not at all. “I give the names, I give the options, I give the second options in case the first options are not possible, but I give all the information based on my analysis, my experience and projections for the future.”
Rodriguez has made 32 appearances for Real Mardrid this season but has become accustomed to life on the bench, starting just 20 games. His current deal at the Bernabeu runs until June 2020. Source: express
