CEO Mark Zuckerberg has revealed that his company is secretly developing a mind-reading brain technology designed to let humans communicate telepathically.
According to a source, the social media company is building a secretive team of engineers which have been tasked to develop a “brain-computer interface” based on neuroimaging technology that will be used for a so-called “communications system of the future”.
Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg has previously described the telepathy as the “ultimate communication technology.
More so, the project is reported being initiated by Facebook’s Building 8 team which is the same with Google’s X division and as well as Amazon’s Lab126, Building 8 is a clandestine development unit in charge with creating new modernization and innovations “Darpa-style” breakthroughs for Facebook.
During Facebook’s yearly developer conference on Wednesday in California, head of the company’s experimental technologies division Building 8, Regina Dugan, stated that Facebook was working closely on “optical neuro-imaging systems” that would enable people to type words directly from their brain at 100 words per minute like five times the speed potential on a smartphone.
Moreover, communications platform project particularly relates to neuroimaging, a relatively new but highly advanced scientific field which involves utilizing technologies like ultrasound, x-rays and magnetic resonance to map the brain.
Dugan said, “It sounds impossible but it’s closer than you think,” She joined Facebook from Google last 2016 and once led DARPA, the US government’s advanced defense research division.
Even though Facebook has almost 2 billion users, CEO Mark Zuckerberg is investing massively in ideas such as virtual reality to make sure that the social network is not brushed aside by new and modern technologies.
Furthermore, Ms. Dugan said a major barrier to reading thoughts would be developing non-invasive sensors able of detecting brainwaves. Source: itechpost
